Sherlyn was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was raised in Rankin Inlet and Chesterfield Inlet. She has four wonderful children and one granddaughter. Sherlyn moved to Arviat in June 2005. She started her career working for the Northwest Company in six different communities, and enjoys travelling and meeting different people.
She started sewing at the age of 12 after she moved to Chesterfield Inlet from Rankin Inlet with her family. Initially she worked with scrap materials that were around the house, but quickly developed a sense of style and design.
Sherlyn has grown a strong passion for fashion, especially fur fashion. She travels to and attends fashion and trade shows across Canada and has worked in the Territory to develop and design garments for the fur industry. Even in her spare time, she enjoys sewing and making traditional Inuit crafts.
